War is Hare

A 2-player artillery game for Playdate, created for the Yellow Square Jam.

War is Hare is a game I created for the Yellow Square Jam, a game jam organized by grhmhome where participants had one month to create a game for the Playdate handheld console. It managed to win second place, which is a pretty substantial achievement considering it’s my very first time publishing a game I’ve built from zero!

The game was heavily inspired by the Worms series, borrowing several aspects of it such as turn-based artillery gameplay, destructible terrain, and a very silly arsenal of weapons to fight with.

Due to time constraints and my lack of programming experience, I ended up cutting a lot of corners, and it’s nowhere near as polished as I would’ve liked it to be. Still, it was a pretty fun (albeit stressful) exercise, and I got to rope my good friend Dom into recording a bunch of silly voice lines for it!

I’d very much like to revisit the idea of a multiplayer artillery game for the Playdate in the future. I have a few thoughts on how to tackle the obstacles I could not overcome during the jam, and ideas to make the setting and gameplay less… derivative. Nothing concrete yet, but if I do get around to working on such a project, I’d also like to share the journey with you on this website.

War is Hare is available for download on itch.io. If you’re a Playdate owner, feel free to give it a try!
